The One-Half Tuition Scholarship Project
There are 190 students attending the colegio in Agua Caliente this school year (which runs from the middle of January until the end of November). The tuition to attend the colegio is $300 per year. Due to the poverty in our mountainous town, it is difficult for the parents of some of the students to afford the tuition. That being the case, the colegio started to offer half-scholarships to families in need in 2014. That year, we had 60 scholarship recipients. Each year the number of scholarships has increased; there are currently 109 scholarship recipients. This increase is partly due to new enrollment and partly to an effort to retain current students. Parents pay half the cost, or $150.00. This relieves some of the economic burden on the family, while still ensuring that the parents are committed to supporting the education of their child or children. We also offer half-scholarships to families who have more than one child at the colegio.
In order to raise funds for the remaining tuition, the one-half tuition scholarship program was developed. Sponsors are encouraged to write a note to their child in the hopes that both will get to know each other. The children love hearing from their sponsors and affectionately refer to them as «padrino» or «madrina» (godfather, godmother). At the end of the year a progress report is sent to the sponsor.

El Proyecto de Becas
Hay 190 alumnos en el colegio en Agua Caliente este año escolar (lo cual va desde mediados de enero hasta finales de noviembre). La colegiatura anual es de $300. Dado la extrema pobreza de nuestro pueblo montañoso, es difícil para algunos padres de familia alcanzar pagar la cuota. Viendo esta realidad, en el colegio empezamos a ofrecer medias becas a las familias más necesitadas en el 2014. Ese año, habían 60 alumnos participantes en el programa. Cada año se ha incrementado el número de becados; actualmente hay 109 recipientes. Las causas del incremento son dos: primero, por nuevos alumnos, y segundo, por retener alumnos ya matriculados. Los padres de familia pagan la mitad de la cuota, o $150. Esto alivia parte del peso económico de la familia mientras asegura que aún están comprometidos con la educación de sus hijos. También se ofrece una media beca a las familias con más de un hijo en el colegio.
Para recaudar fondos para pagar lo demás de la cuota, se desarrolló el programa de medias becas. Motivamos a los padrinos de beca escribir una nota a su alumno para que se conozcan. A los alumnos les encanta recibir las notas y refieran con afecto a su «padrino» o «madrina». A finalizar el año, se le manda un reporte de progreso al padrino sobre su alumno.
