Esmeralda tiene trece años y estudia séptimo grado. Vive con su papá en el cantón de Agua Zarca, aproximadamente diez minutos en carro del centro del pueblo. Es la única hija! El papá de Esmeralda es agricultor. Lastimosamente, su mamá falleció el año pasado del cáncer del intestino. Tenía más de tres años de haber sido diagnosticada, y aunque estaba en remisión, después se empeoró rápidamente. Toda la familia ayudaba para cuidarla, y Esmeralda y su mamá vivían con ellos en los últimos meses.
A pesar de todo, Esmeralda es una niña contenta. Su materia favorita es física y su comida favorita es sopa de gallina. Cuando sea grande, quiere ser profesora. Quiere a todos sus profesores del colegio y ellos la han inspirado y motivado ser maestra, también. Esmeralda estudia en el colegio desde primer grado, y varios de sus primos también estudian aquí. En su tiempo libre, le gusta jugar en la tablet y pasar con los primos. Ella dice que es molestona!
Los últimos años han sido bien difíciles para la familia de Esmeralda, económicamente hablando. En los terrenos de su papá, solo pueden sembrar maíz y frijoles sufiencientes para la familia, entonces los hermanos de Esmeralda turnan para pagar su mensualidad en el colegio y también la luz y el agua de la casa para su papá. Hemos ofrecido una beca entera a Esmeralda, ya que es importante que tenga estabilidad, por lo menos en poder estudiar y estar con sus amigos.

Esmeralda is thirteen years old and in seventh grade. She lives with her father in the township of Agua Zarca, about 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Agua Caliente. She is the only girl in the family! Esmeralda’s father is a farmer. Tragically, Esmeralda lost her mother to intestinal cancer in the middle of last year. She was diagnosed three years ago and had been doing much better, but then suffered a relapse. The whole family pitched in to help take care of her, and Esmeralda was even living with her uncle and cousins during the end of her mother’s fight.
Despite everything, Esmeralda is a cheerful girl. Her favorite subject is gym and her favorite food is chicken soup. When she grows up, she wants to be a teacher. She loves all her teachers here at PNARDS and they have inspired her to want to be a teacher, too. Esmeralda has been at PNARDS since she was in first grade and many of her cousins also go to school here. Esmeralda likes to play on her tablet in her free time and spend time with her cousins. She describes herself as a pest!
The last several years have been very difficult for Esmeralda’s family, economically speaking. Her father is able to grow only enough to feed his family and her brothers take turns helping to pay Esmeralda’s tuition and the electricity and water bills for their father. We have offered Esmeralda a full scholarship this year, because we feel it is important that she continue to study here.
