Yessenia tiene nueve años y estudia segundo grado en el colegio. Vive con su papá y su madrastra en Agua Fría, un cantón de Agua Caliente. Su papá, Franklin, trabaja en la panadería del colegio. Anda en bicicleta vendiendo pan en todo el pueblo. Su madrasta, Claudia, acaba de tener un bebé. La mamá de Yessenia vive cerca pero no tiene mucha interés en la niña.
Cuando tenía seis años, Yessi estudió unos meses en el colegio, pero su papá la llevó porque era muy complicado para traerla, especialmente porque la familia vive algo lejos del pueblo. Yessenia era muy tímida y no le gustaba jugar con sus compañeros. Estudió primer grado en la escuelita pública cerca de su casa, pero no aprendió a leer. Entonces, su papá la matricuó aquí en primer grado otra vez y hoy está progresando bastante.
La comida favorita de Yessenia es pizza y su materia favorita es lenguaje. Cuando sea grande, quiere ser doctora. A Yessenia le gusta estudiar y ayudar en la casa en su tiempo libre. Dice que es una niña muy contenta. También es responsable, porque ya que Claudia tuvo su hijo, a Yessenia le corresponde agarrar el bus solita. A veces no hace las tareas, porque no tiene luz eléctrica en la casa.

Yessenia is nine years old and in second grade at PNARDS. She lives with her dad and step-mom in Agua Fría, one of the townships outside Agua Caliente. Her father, Franklin, works with the bakery at school. He sells the baked goods from his bicycle, all over town. Her step-mom, Claudia, has just had a new baby. Yessenia’s mother lives nearby but she is not really interested in raising her.
When she was six, Yessenia studied at PNARDS for a few months of kindergarten, but her father took her out because it was too complicated for him to bring her to school and come get her, especially since the family lives far out of town. Yessenia was very shy and didn’t like to play with her classmates. She studied first grade in her village but did not learn to read. Last year, she repeated first grade at PNARDS and has improved a lot!
Yessenia’s favorite food is pizza and her favorite subject is language arts. When she grows up, she wants to be a doctor. Yessenia likes to study and helps out with the chores at home in her free time. She says she’s a very happy girl. She’s also very responsible, because now that Claudia has had her baby, Yessenia is in charge of getting herself on the bus to school every day and getting herself home again. Sometimes she doesn’t do her homework, though, because there’s no electricity at her house.
