Lupita is twelve years old and in second grade. She has repeated both first and second grade several times, because she has a learning disability and has not yet learned how to read. Lupita lives with her mom, Silvia, and her sister, Rosa, in a very poor environment. Her mother does washing and cleaning around town but does not earn enough to truly support her daughters. Both girls have problems with their eyesight, as well.
Lupita’s favorite subjects are math and computers. She spends most of her day with a special teacher, who is in charge of helping the students who need additional help with reading and math. Lupita’s favorite food is cucumber sliced up with lime juice and tabasco sauce. She is a big help around the house, especially with sweeping and putting things away. In her free time, she likes to rest in the hammock and she also has a talent for embroidery!
Although Lupita’s mother never went to school herself, or perhaps because of this, she feels it is very important for her daughter to learn how to read. She’s been going to the public school in town, and last year they told her she could move on to third grade, but Lupita’s mother thought this was incorrect, since her daughter had not progressed at all. Therefore, she decided to enroll Lupita at PNARDS, with the encouragement of a neighbor, in the hope that more specialized attention could help her daughter to advance in her studies.
