Madelin is fourteen years old and in ninth grade. Madelin has been going here since first grade, the same year in which PNARDS was founded. She lives with her parents and her sister, Alexandra, who is in third grade, and their dog Osa (Bear), in the township of Agua Zarca. She lives right next door to her cousins, Santiago and Luis, who also go to PNARDS.
Madelin plans to go to the public high school in Agua Caliente next year. She loves all kinds of animals and has lots of them at home, including chickens, bunnies, pigs, and cows. In her free time, she does her homework and helps out around the house. Her favorite food is lasagna.
Madelin’s parents keep dairy cattle and her mother also makes tortillas to sell. However, their income is only about $150 per month, especially now that the price of milk has dropped. She and her sister get a ride to school with their neighbor every day, which means they don’t have to pay for the bus to get in to town, but even so, it is hard for her parents to afford the tuition for both girls. Therefore, we have offered a half-scholarship to Madelin so that she can finish out her primary school here.
