María tiene catorce años y estudia noveno grado en el colegio. Es su tercer año aquí. Vive en el cantón de Agua Fría. María es adoptada.
La materia favorita de María es el inglés. En su tiempo libre, le gusta escuchar música y ayuda a su mamá en la tiendita que tienen. Su comida favorita es tacos. Cuando María sea grande, quiere ser pediatra. El otro año, espera seguir estudiando en el instituto (high school).
La mamá de María no puede con toda la cuota mensual, ya que es madre soltera y sus ingresos dependen de la tiendita, pero quiere que su hija reciba la atención más individualizada de los profesores del colegio. Siempre les cuenta que les valora mucho porque no dejan ignorada a su hija, como hicieron en la escuelita pública en su lugar.

María is fourteen years old and in ninth grade at PNARDS. This is the third year she is attending school here. She lives in the nearby small village of Agua Fría; María is adopted.
María’s favorite subject is English. In her free time, she listens to music and helps her mom in the small store they have in their home. María’s favorite food is tacos. When she grows up she wants to be a pediatrician. She plans to continue studying at the public high school in Agua Caliente next year.
María’s mother isn’t able to afford tuition at PNARDS, because she is a single mom and she doesn’t have a steady job, but she wants her daughter to get the more individualized attention the teachers here provide. She always tells the teachers here how much it means to her that they don’t ignore María like they did in the public school.
