Marta tiene quince años y estudia sexto grado. Su hermana, Dora, está en su misma clase, y su hermano, Ángel, estudia octavo. Es su primer año en el colegio. La hermana de Marta, Lupe, es graduada del colegio. Marta y Dora viven con sus papás y hermanos en un pequeño caserío llamado “El Morrito”, fuera del Agua Caliente. Caminan aproximadamente una hora para llegar a clases en la mañana…y más en la tarde porque van para arriba! La familia es pobre – muchos días, la niñas llegan sin haber desayunado. Ellos tienen un pequeño terreno donde cultivan maíz y frijoles y también tienen gallinas, pero lo que siembran ni a veces alcanza para la familia.
Marta es atleta. Le encanta jugar fútbol y también ha competido en el evento nacional de atletismo en los 600m y 800m. El año pasado, ganó la maratón del pueblo. Cuando Marta empezó a estudiar en el colegio, era muy tímida y casi no podía leer…pero ya no! Ha mejorado bastante, gracias, sobre todo, a dos profesoras, Susana y Amalia, que la ayudaron y la siguen animando. Las materias favoritas de Marta son computación, lectura, y física, y su comida favorita es el pollo. Dice que una cosa interesante sobre ella es «nada…soy aburrida y no hago nada,» pero en su tiempo libre juega pelota. Cuando sea grande, Marta quiere ser profesora.

Marta is fifteen years old and in sixth grade. Marta’s sister, Dora, is also in her class, and their brother, Ángel, is in eighth grade. This is his first year at PNARDS. Her older sister, Lupe, is a PNARDS graduate. Marta and Dora live with their parents and siblings in a tiny hamlet called “El Morrito”, outside Agua Caliente. The girls walk about an hour to get to school in the morning, but it takes them longer in the afternoon to go home because they have to go uphill. Their family is extremely poor – most days the girls come to school without breakfast! They have a small area which they cultivate with yucca, corn, and beans, and they also keep chickens, but the crops they raise are just enough to keep for food for themselves.
Marta is very athletic. She loves playing soccer and has competed in track and field at the national level. She won the town-wide marathon last year. When Marta started at PNARDS, she could hardly read and was very shy in class – but not anymore! She’s improved a lot, thanks to the support of two special teachers, Susana and Amalia. Marta’s favorite subjects are computers, reading, and gym and her favorite food is chicken. She says “one interesting thing about me is…nothing…I’m boring and I don’t do anything!”, but in her free time, she likes to play soccer. When Marta grows up, she wants to be a teacher.
