Marcos and Ángel are brothers; they come from Plan de las Mesas, near the city of Chalatenango. Their father, José Luis, is the manager of the medical specialties clinic run by Padre Rafael. Their mother, Juana de Jesús, takes care of the house and of their grandmother, who lives with them. They have one other brother, Luis Antonio, who is 22 and works odd jobs to help his family.
When they are at school, the brothers live together in a small room their family is renting in San Salvador. They both like to play soccer. Marcos is on the ITCA team and Ángel is going to be joining the team shortly. Ángel and Marcos are both active in their church and in ADESCO (a community development organization). They do a lot to help their community.
They will receive a two-year technical degree in telecommunications engineering. In their first semester, they are studying basic electrical systems and how to read architectural plans. Later on in their studies, they will begin to specialize in installation of telephone lines and take other courses related to telephony. When they finish their degree, they will be able to find work installing telephone lines and internet connections in houses or working on the telephone lines in the street. There is a need for this type of specialization in El Salvador, since telephone and internet are still a growing service. The average salary for a telephone technician is $350/month.
The institute where Marcos and Ángel study, ITCA (Instituto Tecnológico Centroamericano), is specialized in engineering and other technical degrees. The ITCA provides practical courses and apprenticeships to the students, so that what they are learning in school can then be applied. It is one of the best schools in the nation for this type of study.
